Definition of Communication

Communication refers to the exchange and transmission of information between people or between people and nature through a certain behavior or medium. In a broad sense, it refers to the use of any method or medium by two or more parties who need information without violating their respective wishes. Accurate and secure transmission of information from one party to another.

Classification of Communication

1. Classified by Transmission Medium

Wired Communication

Refers to the communication in which the transmission medium is wire, cable, optical cable, waveguide, nano-material, etc..
Characteristics: The medium can be seen and touched (open wire communication, cable communication, optical cable communication, optical fiber cable communication).

Wireless Communication

Refers to a form of communication in which the transmission medium is invisible and intangible (such as electromagnetic waves).
Examples: Microwave communication, short wave communication, mobile communication, satellite communication, scattering communication.

2. Classification According to the Signal Transmitted in the Channel

Analog Signal

A signal where a certain parameter (such as the amplitude, frequency, and phase of the continuous wave, the amplitude, width, and position of the pulse wave, etc.) can take an infinite number of values and directly correspond to the message.
Also called a continuous signal.

Digital Signal

A signal where a certain parameter can only take a limited number of values and often does not directly correspond to the message.
Also called a discrete signal.

3. Classified by Working Frequency Band

Long wave communication
Medium wave communications

Microwave communication

4. Classified by Modulation

Baseband Transmission

The signal is not modulated and sent directly to the channel for transmission.

Frequency Band Transmission

The signal is sent to the channel for transmission after modulation.
The receiving end has corresponding demodulation measures.

5. Classified According to the Division of Labor and Data Transmission Direction of the Communication Parties

Point-to-Point Communication

Simplex Communication: Messages can only be transmitted in one direction. Examples include broadcasting, remote control, wireless paging, etc..
Half-Duplex Communication: Both parties can send and receive messages but cannot do so simultaneously. Examples include walkie-talkies and transceivers.
Full-Duplex Communication: Both parties can transmit messages in both directions simultaneously. Examples include ordinary telephones and mobile phones.
